Around the world, Russia’s February 24 military invasion of Ukraine has been widely condemned. And even a Russian restaurant in Singapore also seems to be feeling the heat from netizens.

On Tuesday, March 1, Dumplings.ru released a statement on Facebook to address the issue and called for peace, pledging to donate 10% of all delivery sales to humanitarian efforts in Ukraine.

The restaurant, which opened in 2019, is the love child of couple Vadim Zubovski and Alena Zubovska, who have lived in Singapore for more than 17 years.

Although the couple are Russian nationals, they shared that their family is based in Kyiv, Ukraine, and they are “worried and praying for their safety in the hope that this difficult time will pass soon.”

“Our hearts go out to all those affected in Ukraine and their loved ones,” they added.

Referring to the negative reviews, which are no longer accessible online, the restaurant said: “Even now, we wish for nothing but peace in these troubled times. We hope people can be kinder in their words. and refrain from allowing further hate speech in this humble space we have created.”

On a more positive note, the pair also said that many other people reached out to check them out.

The post’s comments section was filled with encouraging remarks asking the couple to ignore the haters.

According to lifestyle platform Alvinology, Dumplings.ru started as a humble food kiosk before establishing itself as a restaurant in 2020. It is one of the only Russian restaurants in Singapore owned by Russians.

Inspired by the couple’s grandmothers, dishes here are prepared with authentic family recipes that have been passed down over a century ago.

Unsurprisingly, the star of the show here is the pelmeni, a dumpling dish. These are similar to our Asian dumplings, but instead are stuffed with ingredients like salmon, smoked bacon, potato and lamb.

If you also want to support Dumplings.ru, you can visit them at one of their restaurants or place an order online here.
