Two top tennis players have had their watches, bags and cash stolen from a hotel in Eastbourne.

World number 15 Diego Schwartzman and number 49-ranked Pedro Martinez were staying at the Hydro Hotel to warm up for Wimbledon when their belongings were snatched.

Sussex Police confirmed the incidents. A statement read: ‘We can confirm that we have received reports of two separate break-ins at the Hydro Hotel in Mount Road, Eastbourne on Monday June 20. A number of high-value items, including watches and bags, were stolen, along with cash and personal items. The incidents are under investigation and we have no further information at this time.

Speaking about the incident, Martinez, 25, said via The Sun: “It was tough. I had a watch stolen from my room yesterday and Schwartzman had things stolen from his room as well.

“I had a bad night, that’s the truth. I did not sleep. It was difficult to prepare for the game but I just tried to concentrate on the game. They have their own investigation at the hotel. When I got to the room I realized my watch wasn’t there.

“I bought it when I reached the third round of Roland Garros for the first time (in 2020). It was sentimental, yes, because it was from there. But what can i do?i searched all over the room there was none and when i went to reception to communicate with people then Diego came 15 mins after saying the same thing.”

The two players played on Wednesday, taking on Britain’s Ryan Peniston and Jack Draper respectively.

The Wimbledon seeds were announced on Tuesday with Novak Djokovic and Rafa Nadal securing the top two spots. They were followed by Casper Ruud, Stefanos Tsitsipa, Carlos Alcaraz and Matteo Berretini.
