Untitled is the Ugly Duckling team’s new modern European bar and restaurant
It looks like new tiered venues could be the trend this year in Melbourne. The CBD scored HER a few weeks ago and now it’s Richmond’s turn, as Swan Street newcomer Untitled officially opens its doors.
A labor of love over three years in the making, the venue is the work of David Abela, Andrew Ryan and Daniel Vid; the same spirits behind the nearby cocktail haunt The Ugly Duckling.
The team transformed a former three-storey art store into a modern 100-seat European bar and restaurant, with creative yet timeless interiors by Flack Studio. It’s a warm and eclectic space, with lots of rich textures, marble accents, and an impressive art collection.
In the kitchen, 2015 Young Chef of the Year Tim Martin (The European, Harvest) offers a contemporary menu with European influences. The snack game is particularly strong, with a host of bites ready to pair with this after-work wine. Think prosciutto with a melon escabèche, arancini with peas and ricotta, a terrine of smoked pork and oysters with a reseda with celery heart.
Going deeper, you can feast on duck stew gnocchi finished with salt; a seafood spaghetti with clams, prawns and calamari; and a pithivier (a style of pie) of Gruyere, potato and chard, served with a mustard aioli.
A grass-fed O’Connor Scotch fillet features whipped bone marrow, a Murray cod fillet is accented with roasted cucumber and harissa, and you’ll spy a Russian honey cake topping the dessert offering. .
The matching wine selection pays homage to European drips and varietals, with a healthy spread offered by the glass. Take a seat at the Horseshoe Bar to sip Rob Dolan Pinot Blanc, or head to France with a glass of Gamay from Domaine des Espérances in Touraine.
Cocktails stick to classics like a negroni and dry gin martini, while the appetizer crowd will be all about the grapefruit-infused Kina Highball and the Spritz With No Name – a refreshing blend of Campari, Pampelle Grapefruit, sparkling wine, orange and olive.
Find Untitled at 236 Swan Street, Richmond. It is open from 5:00 p.m. until late Tuesday through Thursday and from 12:00 p.m. until late on Friday and Saturday.
