The best restaurant in the world is in a football stadium
- Geranium in Copenhagen, Denmark, was named the best restaurant in the world.
- The world’s 50 best restaurants announced their annual ranking on Monday in London.
- Russian restaurants were notably absent from the list.
The best restaurant in the world is the Geranium in Copenhagen, according to the annual ranking of the 50 best restaurants in the world.
The restaurant follows in the footsteps of fellow Dane, Noma, who won the title last year. The ranking was announced Monday at an awards ceremony hosted by Stanley Tucci in London.
The geranium has a somewhat usual location. After moving from King’s Garden in 2007, in 2010 it moved to the eighth floor of the city’s National Football Stadium, overlooking Fælledparken Gardens.
Since opening its doors to the public, Geranium has also become the first Danish restaurant to win three Michelin stars.
Throughout 2022, Geranium served a meatless menu for the first time. Rasmus Kofoed, the chef at Geranium, quit eating meat five years ago.
This year, Geranium’s menu focused on local vegetables and seafood from organic and biodynamic farms in Denmark and other parts of Scandinavia, according to its website.
Russian restaurants were notably absent from this year’s list. In 2021, two Moscow restaurants made the list, at 25th and 30th place.
The prize organizers reacted quickly to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. They announced that they were moving the prizes from their original location in Moscow to London.
However, because the voting took place before the war in Ukraine, Russian votes were included, World’s 50 Best Restaurants content director William Drew told Bloomberg.
American winners in the top 30 included New York restaurants Atomix and Le Bernardin.
