Soup sold at Evanston’s restaurant to pay for aid to Ukraine

EVANSTON, IL — An Evanston restaurant introduced a special menu Thursday to support humanitarian efforts surrounding the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Prairie Moon, 1635 Chicago Ave., will be offering a new Ukrainian-inspired soup every Thursday through April 7, restaurant representatives have announced.
All the money from the sale of the soup will be donated to Médecins Sans Frontières to help it in its humanitarian work in Ukrainethe restaurant covering all product and labor costs.
The first soup on the menu is cabbage roll soup, a cabbage and ground beef stew with tomato, root vegetables and rice. Prices range from $5 for a cup or $9 for a bowl or an extra two cups as part of the weekly Dinner For Two special.
Médecins Sans Frontières, also known as Médecins Sans Frontières or MSF, has teams in Ukraine, Poland, Moldova, Hungary, Slovakia, Russia and Belarus.
On Tuesday, its first shipment of emergency supplies arrived at the Health Ministry in Kyiv after the organization halted normal activities and shifted to emergency operations in Ukraine.
Restaurant owner Robert Strom said the decision to donate to MSF was made in collaboration with his wife, Wendy, a medical professional.
“We looked at various organizations, all of which are doing amazing things,” Robert Strom said, “but Doctors Without Borders has a special place in my wife’s heart.”
Strom hopes to raise a total of $3,000 from soup sales at the restaurant, a staple of downtown Evanston for two decades, during the four-week fundraiser.
