Police release man arrested in connection to hotel parking lot shooting in Quebec’s Laurentians region
Provincial police have released a man arrested in connection with the shooting in the parking lot of a hotel complex in Estérel, Quebec. Friday, about 100 kilometers north of Montreal in the Laurentians.
After evaluating his account of the events, the police did not charge him. The 53-year-old man was released on a promise to appear in court.
Valeriy Tarasenko was injured in the shooting, according to the mayor of Estérel Frank Pappas and police sources from Radio-Canada. He is being treated in hospital for serious, but not life-threatening injuries, police said.
Tarasenko is an entrepreneur of Russian-speaking Ukrainian origin who holds assets in several companies, notably in Quebec and Florida, reports Radio-Canada.
He is known to have ties to Inna Yashchyshyn, a Russian-speaking Ukrainian who recently made headlines for infiltrating the Mar-a-Lago estate and former US President Donald Trump’s entourage by posing as a member of the Rothschild banking dynasty.
Radio-Canada learned shortly after the shooting around 1 p.m. that there had been three victims, including one with serious head injuries. But the Sûreté du Québec later released a statement saying only one person suffered what appears to be a gunshot wound.
The shooting happened at the Estérel Resort, which is just off chemin Fridolin-Simard on Lac Dupuis.
Radio-Canada reports that three people opened fire on three others in the parking lot, and that the shooters then fled in a black SUV.
