No Western sanctions can heavily affect the Russian economy
MOSCOW, January 14. /TASS/. The Russian economy is resistant to any external impact and sanctions cannot seriously affect it, Chairman of the State Duma’s International Affairs Committee Leonid Slutsky told an online press briefing on Friday. .
“We will react appropriately. We have diversified our economy, today it can withstand all external influences. And, of course, I cannot say that there are no sensible sanctions,” said noted the chairman of the lower house committee. He also mentioned that Russia has appropriate and, if necessary, symmetrical methods to “counter any kind of sanctions”.
Slutsky noted that “sanctions and other restrictive measures were not the right tools to use, although they could probably exist somewhere as an exception.” “But there’s no need to use them in modern world politics. It’s unjustified,” the Russian senator said.
“As for the actions directed against us, we are aware of our capabilities, no restrictive measures can lead to catastrophic consequences for the Russian economy,” Slutsky insisted.
On January 12, a group of Democratic lawmakers led by Senator Robert Menendez introduced a bill in the US Senate on restrictions on Russia if tensions around Ukraine escalate. This involves, among others, sanctions against Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Prime Minister, the heads of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defense, the Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces and others members of the military leadership. In addition, restrictive measures could affect the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
