New Restaurant Openings in the San Francisco Bay Area

HAYES VALLEY – The owners of the Fantastic originally said they hoped to open by the end of August, but after numerous pandemic delays the chairs have finally got, the team is ready to rock, and the opening date is officially confirmed for next Friday, October 22. Remember it’s this cool new wine and seafood bar from the Bird Dog team, serving up luxury bubbles and eclairs with caviar and spinning vinyl. Eater has already revealed the big photo of the space, drinks and food, but peruse the final menus below, which just dropped this week and look so fresh.
MISSION – The last restaurant of the Flour + Water group now serves the classic cacio e pepe in a cozy heated courtyard. Penny Roma opened on October 11 in the old Central Kitchen space, offering simple but satisfying fresh pasta, shinko pears and prosciutto, as well as wood-fired rib eye every night of the week at the Mission. CIVIC CENTER – La Paloma The cocktail bar opens in the municipal market of La Cocina on Friday, October 15. An award-winning bartender has developed the drinks, which have been specially designed to pair well with the diverse food offerings of female entrepreneurs, and from tequila cocktails to tinga tostadas, it promises to be a happy hour scene.
RUSSIAN HILL – Fine dining restaurant Nisei opened in August, and now Iris Bar opens next door on October 14. Cocktails are offered by the same team, with plenty of riffs on highballs, featuring whiskey and Japanese spirits.
SOMA – Last name is a new bistro nestled in the encyclopedia City beer store on a mission. Open on September 22, it now serves a menu of stuffed eggs, little gems, hamachi crudo, and fried steak, with plenty of excellent wine and beer, of course.
TIBURON – Celebrity chef Michael Mina and nightlife producer and reality TV personality Brent Bolthouse (the hills) are finally opening Bungalow Kitchen on November 3. Illustrations and photos reveal a split-level haute-hippie space with waterfront views and a menu of oak-fired steaks and duck fat fries.
CASTRO – Step into the colorful new all-day dining destination, Copas, a laid-back Latino-style restaurant and bar by Jessica Kapoor. Kapoor brings the experience of Saison Hospitality Group, where she is the Chief of Staff, to this location for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
MISSION – Don’t be fooled by the name: The Korner store is actually a family-friendly spot for Korean food and soju in the old Mission Cheese space. Tablehopper spotted the opening first.
LOWER NOB HILL – Tahona Mercado opened at the end of August, but has expanded its offering as fall approaches. There are now ready-to-order and take-out options, including tortas and quesadillas and items like pupusas and tamales from Estrellita’s Snacks; Cuban flan from What The Flan; Lobo’s vegan ice cream; and conchas and other modern Mexican pastries from Norte 54.
SACRAMENTO – Plant Based Mexican Food Pop-Up Bambi vegan tacos has a permanent home at 1725 I Street. The restaurant is open Thursday through Saturday and serves margaritas and tacos loaded with “beef crimini” and cider-breaded cauliflower.
LOS GATOS – Silicon Valley restaurateurs Jim and Angelique Stump want Los Gatos diners to enjoy caviar and champagne on weekdays at Shepherd + Sims, a fine-dining restaurant adorned with colorful murals, mosaic tiles and polished brass .
SAN JOSE – Oakland’s Cafe Orbite, a stellar place for Vietnamese iced coffee and buckets of miniature donuts, has landed in San José. The new location is inside an office complex and is open Friday through Sunday 8:30 am to 5 pm.
MISSION BAY – Food Network Chef Tyler Florence Celebrates His Glitzy New Steakhouse Miller & Lux near the Chase Center on September 28, Independent marine journal reported first. Speak the Chronicle, Ken Faulk handled the mid-century modern design and the menu features table-tossed Caesar salads, dry-aged steaks and a truly fancy burger.
HEALDSBURG – Marine Layer Wines opened their new tasting room in Healdsburg with a list of California chardonnay and pinot noir to taste with mezze platters prepared by the soon to be opened Little Saint, the avant-garde place of SingleThread owners Kyle and Katina Connaughto.
SANTA ROSA – Los Angeles Hot Chicken Chain Dave’s Hot Chicken landed in the Bay Area on September 24, bringing his bright red fried chicken fillets at varying levels of spiciness to Santa Rosa, the the Chronicle reports.
CAMPBELL – Former Atelier Crenn conductor Trent Lidgey went it alone with A bar of raw fish, a new seafood restaurant in South Bay. Mercury News fetch Ora King Salmon drizzled with black garlic molasses and salsa and a lobster roll star on the opening menu.
SAN JOSE – Well done on the arrival of Cash only, a self-proclaimed “West Coast Honkytonk” in San José. The bar, which serves six beer combos and a $ 5 jar of pickles, opened on September 23.
FIDI – Flagship Michael Mina in downtown San Francisco has officially turned into a shady new Greek restaurant. Estiatorio Ornos open September 18, SF Chronicle reported first. Come and taste shrimp with crushed tomatoes and feta, sole coated with a filo pastry crust and wild mushroom moussaka.
OAKLAND – La Santa Torta, the quesabirria food truck sensation, has finally opened its much anticipated brick and mortar restaurant. La Santa Torta “soft” opened on September 21, featuring a mechanical bull, raffle and tacos. The permanent location is at 95 Linden Street, and the truck is still roaming.
SAN JOSE – Santana Row is adding two new restaurants and a boba tea room, Mercury News reports: Left wing bar for Korean Fried Chicken (open September 16), Boba Guys for Milk Tea (coming later in November), and Dumpling Time (slated for the end of the year).
MARKET – La Bande reopens within the Proper Hotel on September 22, but it’s really a brand new opening as the old café bar is transformed into a full-service tapas bar. Michelin-starred chef Jason Fox, of the now-closed Commonwealth, has been waiting a pandemic a year and a half to launch this new menu of grilled squid, tomato toast and gin and tonic, all served in the gorgeous Green Corner cafe.
PRESIDIO – Equator Coffees opened its new location at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge on September 10. The historic Round House Cafe now serves lattes, salads and spectacular bay views.
MARINA – Wood-fired bagels roll in Ghirardelli Square. Daily Driver bagelry and creamery have new third location opening September 16 the SF chronicle reported first.
FILET – There is a new dessert tasting menu for the filet. Luis Villavelazquez, a dessert “ghost writer” behind the desserts at Citizen Cake and Absinthe, is now opening his own spot called The elements, according to the SF chronicle.
OAKLAND – Binny’s is a new cocktail bar and restaurant in Old Oakland, now serving steak frites and classic cocktails in Art Deco interiors, Berkeleyside was spotted first.
BERKELEY – University Ave has a new option for croissants, cookies and zlabia. Belmo Cafe is a new bakery, now serving French and Algerian pastries, Berkeleyside reports.
RICHMOND – Assemble the marketplace is a great new restaurant, bar, market and events all combined, says Berkeleyside. And Tommy’s barbecue company also opened a shop just outside, serving brisket, ribs and chicken, with mac and cheese and sweet corn on the side.
