Nantucket Island Fire: Massive blaze damages historic hotel and several other buildings

“The actions of the citizens and the captain saved lives,” the department said.
But the flames raged and spread to several other buildings, with an “extensive fire” developing in at least two of the structures despite firefighters’ efforts to contain the blaze, the fire department said.
“The fire could not be contained within the affected building and spread to several surrounding buildings,” the department said in its press release. “The damage to the structures involved is extensive, with several of the buildings being total losses.”
No civilian injuries were reported, but two firefighters were airlifted from the scene for possible heat exhaustion and a third for a back injury, the department said.
The 18-room boutique hotel offers a “unique blend of sophisticated style and laid-back luxury” with harbor views, according to the site.
The fire department issued a statement on Sunday, thanking Nantucket and Cape Cod firefighters who “undoubtedly prevented a massive fire from spreading and causing even more casualties.”
“All firefighters and first responders worked selflessly and diligently to extinguish and contain the fire,” the statement said.
The department also thanked local businesses, restaurants and individuals who “showed unbridled support for victims and first responders” and helped set up a coffee cart station with water, drinks and food.
Several hostels, hotels and private residences have opened their doors to victims of the fire, the department said. Local clothing stores donated clothing and toiletries, while restaurants and individuals donated food and beverages, the statement said.
