Dutch cycling star Mathieu Van Der Poel is ‘mentally broken’ after hotel arrest in Australia
A Dutch cycling star has been left “mentally broken” and removed from a world championship race in Sydney, Australia after being accused of assaulting two teenage girls in her hotel. Cycling superstar Mathieu van der Poel has said he was arrested after clashing with a group of teenagers who repeatedly knocked on his hotel door during a match gone wrong. The 27-year-old has reportedly been charged with two counts of common assault and removed from the 2022 UCI Road World Championships, a 165-mile race taking place in Wollongong, less than an hour after the start of the race. According to reports, the biker pushed two teenagers who were playing a game of ‘knock and run’ to the door of his hotel room. “It’s true, yes. There was a little argument. They were noisy neighbors and they are quite strict here,” Van der Poel said. Sporza. “I went to bed early and many children in the hallway of my room had to constantly knock on the door. After a few times, I’m done with it. I didn’t ask so nicely to stop. Then the police were called and I was taken away. I wasn’t back in my room until 4 o’clock. It’s certainly not ideal. It’s a disaster, but I can’t change anything anymore. I try to make the most of it. He has been released on bail and will appear in Sutherland Court on Tuesday.
